Kentucky Science Center’s new Community Access Membership has seen tremendous growth since its launch in December 2020. Currently, over 3200 households have registered for these free memberships with continued growth expected over the coming weeks and months.
The Community Access Membership provides a free family level membership to participants in the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) or the Women Infants Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program. SNAP/WIC cards from any state are accepted as proof of eligibility for this membership. Community Access Members enjoy all the same benefits as our regular members, including unlimited free access to Kentucky Science Center for 12 months; discounts on camps, workshops, birthday parties, and movies; and savings on gift shop purchases.
Kentucky Science Center is able to provide Community Access Memberships free of charge to participating families thanks to the generosity of community sponsors like Brown-Forman, who recently pledged $30,000 in support of the program and Genentech, who recently pledged $20,000. Other supporters of the Community Access Membership program include GE Appliance, UPS, and LG&E.
Kentucky Science Center Chief Executive Officer Mike Norman believes that the rapid growth in Community Access Membership sign-ups proves that the program is meeting a crucial community need. “Kentucky Science Center is committed to providing equitable access for families across Kentuckiana and beyond to Do Science with us,” says Norman. “We’ve always believed in the idea of “Science for All” – that science education should be available to everyone regardless of socioeconomic status or ability to pay. Programs like this help us put that belief into practice in a truly powerful way.”
Application forms for the Community Access Membership can be downloaded from kysciencecenter.org/membership or are available at Kentucky Science Center’s ticket desk. Forms must be returned to KY Science Center with a copy of the applicant’s valid SNAP/WIC card and photo ID. The SNAP/WIC recipient must be named on the membership.
Kentucky Science Center is located at 727 W. Main Street on Louisville’s historic Museum Row and is open to the public seven days a week from 9:30AM to 5:00PM. Our 50,000 square feet of space allows families plenty of opportunity to explore, experiment, and Do Science. To protect our youngest guests, many of whom may not yet have had the chance to be vaccinated, Kentucky Science Center requires masking for everyone ages 2 and over. Advance tickets are strongly recommended due to capacity restrictions. Reserve your tickets by visiting kysci.org/visit.
