In the first component of Phase IV to be constructed, Waterfront Park and Kentucky Science Center have partnered to create an outdoor experiential learning area called PlayPort at Waterfront Park. PlayPort pays homage to the Ohio River’s rich cultural and industrial heritage with authentic artifacts converted to play structures. PlayPort will engage families and will stimulate learning, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and imagination. Educational signage will be integrated with the interactive exhibits, which will include graphics, educational content on how the exhibits work, play prompts, and QR codes that lead to videos developed by Kentucky Science Center showing science concepts through simple hands-on activities that families and teachers can replicate.
In addition to PlayPort, the first phase of construction will also include a classroom/community meeting space, restroom building, and a parking lot. A community groundbreaking celebration for the park expansion was held on October 25, 2022, and construction is currently underway.
